Noncommutative Geometry and String Theory

The ``International Workshop on Noncommutative Geometry and
String Theory" took place in Yokohama, Japan from March 16 to March 22,
2001. Bringing together
mathematicians and physicists, the workshop provided a stimulating
atmosphere for
scientific exchange and fruitful discussions.
The workshop was focused on recent topics in noncommutative
geometry and string theory. There were more than 100 participants,
joining from Europe, Asia and U.S.A. The workshop included the following
survey talks: Noncommutative geometry (B. Tsygan),
Poisson manifolds and Lie algebroids (P. Xu),
Introduction to D-brains for Mathematicians (Y. Matsuo),
Strings on Poisson-Lie groups (C. Klimcik),
Strings, D-branes and noncommutative geometry
(V. Schomerus).
There were also a number of 60 minutes talks.
This volume summarizes the content of the lectures given at this
workshop and the contributed papers, and we think that it will provide
useful information for researchers and graduate students in physics and
mathematics who are interested in these topics.
