Brief Summary of Each Supplement

Progress of Theoretical Physics Supplement No. 145

Order and Disorder in Quantum Spin Systems

Proceedings of the 16th Nishinomiya Yukawa Memorial Symposium
(November 13 and 14, 2001, Nishinomiya, Japan)
and
the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics Workshop on
Order, Disorder and Dynamics in Quantum Spin Systems
(November 15 and 16, 2001, Kyoto, Japan)

Edited by Takashi Tonegawa, Seiji Miyashita and Hajime Takayama

The present Supplement issue of the Progress of Theoretical Physics comprises the combined proceedings of the above two international meetings. The 16th Nishinomiya-Yukawa Memorial Symposium was designed to overview recent developments regarding various aspects of quantum spin systems from theoretical and experimental points of view, while at the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics Workshop, more specific problems in this field were presented and discussed.

The main topics in both meetings were the interplay between frustration and quantum effects, magnetic-field effects on magnets possessing quantum disordered ground states, a variety of ground states and quantum excitations in systems in which the types of spins or interactions exhibit local, periodic modulation, the effect of randomness (such as the dilution of magnetic atoms), and quantum dynamics in mesoscopic magnetic systems. Basic theories employing the field theoretical approach and methods of computational physics as well as experiments on some synthesized low-dimensional magnets were discussed.

This volume contains the lectures presented at both meetings.
