Quantum Mechanics and Chaos

Proceedings of the International Conference

Edited by Katsuhiro Nakamura, Takahisa Harayama and Kazuo Takatsuka

This volume contains invited lectures at the international conference on ``Quantum Mechanics and Chaos (QMC 2006)", held September 19-21, 2006, in Osaka, Japan.

Quantum mechanics, the greatest theory born in the 20th century, has been serving as an indispensable principle constantly guiding today's science and technology. It explains and even predicts many fundamental phenomena, such as superconductivity, the quantum Hall effect, Bose-Einstein condensation, and so on, and offers great promise in quantum computation and quantum information. Chaos, another great discovery of the 20th century science, has posed fundamental questions concerning quantum theory and statistical mechanics. While researchers in the forefront are revealing the essential nature of the quantum mechanical manifestation of chaos, the essence of microscopic chaos has not yet been fully elucidated. Given these circumstances, and in view of the ubiquitous nature of quantum chaos, it still constitutes a truly important subject in fundamental physics.

The topics covered include:
(1) quantum chaos,
(2) wave chaos in microcavity lasers and Bose-Einstein condensates,
(3) semiclassical theory,
(4) quantum transport and chaotic scattering in mesoscopic systems,
(5) molecular science,
(6) quantum tunneling,
(7) theory of quantum information and mathematical foundation of quantum chaos,
and so on.

This volume serves as a survey on the recent theoretical and experimental development in this field, and will be of value to researchers, as well as to non-experts and students interested in this subject.
