Welcome to Japan-France joint seminar "Physics of dense and active disordered materials", March 13 - 16, 2023, at Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto, Japan
Phase transitions peculiar to random systems, such as the glass transition and the jamming transition in the low-temperature region where thermal fluctuations do not work well, have attracted the attention of many researchers in the last decade, and remarkable progress has been made in mean-field theory using replica trick. However, how to deal with realistic finite-dimensional systems and how to understand similar problems such as shear jamming and discontinuous shear thickening in nonequilibrium systems are still far from being fully understood. In recent years, the study of active matter as a branch of statistical mechanics of non-equilibrium systems has also been actively pursued. Surprisingly, the methods developed in the statistical mechanics of random systems have been found to be effective in describing and understanding active matter, which can be called a pseudo-biomaterial.
In light of these recent developments, the purpose of this workshop is to invite researchers from France, which is a major center of physics of random systems, and to exchange information with Japanese researchers, who have produced steady results, in order to further promote the front of research.
