- AdS/CFT対応から迫る非平衡物理学 --- 具体的な計算を通じて ---
- Outline
- AdS/CFT
AdS/CFT

- Hierarchical helical order in twisted root growth of Arabidopsis.
- Outline
- Molecular and cellular basis of the left-right asymmetry in plant
morphogenesis is a fundamental issue in biology. A rapidly elongating
root/hypocotyl of twisting mutants Arabidopsis thaliana exhibits helical
growth with its handedness opposite to that of underlying cortical
microtubule array in epidermal cells [1]. How such a hierarchical
helical order on the different scales emerges is currently unknown. We
propose a continuum mechanics approach for an elastic origin of the
twisted organ growth in Arabidopsis mutants. Our model suggests that the
observed helical pattern is a direct consequence of the simultaneous
presence of anisotropic growth and the tilting of cortical microtubule
arrays. We predict the root helical pitch angle as a function of the
microtubule helical angle, in agreement with experimental measurements.
The proposed scenario on the emergence of the macroscopic chiral
asymmetry is versatile and will be potentially important to other
biological systems encompassing from protein fibrous structures to tree
trunks.

- Adhesion and collisional release of particles in dense planetary rings
- Outline
- We propose a simple theoretical model for aggregative and fragmentative
collisions in Saturn’s dense rings. In this model the ring matter
consists of a bimodal size distribution: large (meter sized) boulders and
a population of smaller particles (tens of centimeters down to dust). The
small particles can adhesively stick to the boulders and can be released
as debris in binary collisions of their carriers. To quantify
the adhesion force we use the JKR theory. The rates of release and
adsorption of particles are calculated, depending on material
parameters, sizes, and plausible velocity dispersions of carriers and
debris particles. In steady state we obtain an expression for the amount
of free debris relative to the fraction still attached to the carriers.
In terms of this conceptually simple model a paucity of subcentimeter
particles in Saturn’s rings can be understood as a consequence of
the increasing strength of adhesion (relative to inertial forces) for
decreasing particle size. In this case particles smaller than a certain
critical radius remain tightly attached to the surfaces of
larger boulders, even when the boulders collide at their typical speed.
Furthermore, we find that already a mildly increased velocity dispersion
of the carrier-particles may significantly enhance the fraction of free
debris particles, in this way increasing the optical depth of the system.

- Microwave-induced vanishing of magnetoconductance in classical electrons on liquid helium
- Outline
- Two-dimensional electron system formed on the surface of liquid helium
present a unique classical counterpart to quantum Hall systems in
semiconductors. First, this is a low-density system with the large
ratio of the potential energy of electron-electron interaction to the
electron kinetic energy. Therefore, even at T=0 electrons on helium
comprise a strongly-correlated classical system rather than degenerate
Fermi gas typical for electrons in semiconductors. Second, this system
is completely free of impurities, with the electron mobility limited
only by their interaction with surface vibrations. For these reasons,
the study of electron transport in this system presents an important
complement for similar studies in semiconductors.
Recently, we demonstrated an effect of vanishing dissipative
conductivity occuring in 2D electrons on liquid He3 [1]. When exposed
to resonant millimeter microwaves, which excite the transition of
electrons between two lowest 2D subbands, the system exhibit
inter-subband quantum oscillations of magnetoconductance [2]. The
oscillations originate from the scattering-mediated transitions of the
excited electrons between the Landau levels of the occupied subbands.
At sufficiently low temperatures and high radiation intensities, the
diagonal conductivity drops to zero at the minima of the oscillations.
The effect is reminiscent of radiation-induced zero-resistance states
observed recently in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures [3] and is
accompanied by strongly nonequilibrium spatial distribution of
electrons. The latter could be a sign of domains carrying
non-dissipative current [4].

- QUANTUM THERMOMETERS: Thermalization and ergodicity in many-body quantum systems
- Outline
- The emergence of canonical ensembles in quantum statistical mechanics
from first principles is one of the key remaining old questions of
theoretical physics. Even the definition of the temperature at the
nanoscale poses a challenge. Indeed, how precisely the canonical
distribution arises from dynamical laws, without a priori statistical
assumptions, is still unclear.
Our results provide evidence that quantum chaotic systems do thermalize,
that is, they exhibit relaxation to an invariant ergodic state.

- Rigidity of amorphous solids at finite temperatures - a first principle computation of via cloned liquid approach
- Outline
- Microscopic understanding of the elasticity of amorphous solids from the
molecular level is an important problem both from scientific and
practical point of views. We developed a first principle scheme to
compute the elastic moduli of structural glasses at finite temperatures
using the cloned liquid approach which combines the liquid theory and
the replica method. We tested the scheme by applying it to the binary
mixture of soft-spheres and obtained the rigidity or the shear-modulus
which compares well with the earlier result of the molecular dynamic
simulation by Barrat et. al. . The shear modulus is significantly
smaller than the instantaneous one, which is called as the Born term,
and strongly depends on the temperature due to a negative non-affine
correction term which reflects thermal fluctuation of shear-stress field
induced by vibration of particles inside cages, i.e. beta-relaxation. By
increasing the temperature the shear modulus crosses zero at a
temperature Tc up to which the cage size remains small. Presumably Tc
corresponds to the mode coupling critical temperature. The continuous
vanishing of the shear-modulus is reminiscent of superheated crystals
approaching the spinodal temperature, suggesting that the Born's
criteria of melting - mechanical catastrophe - is relevant for amorphous
solids as well as crystals. We present a simple analytical argument to
support the Born's criteria in terms of a rotationally invariant replica
Ginzburg-Landau theory.

- Information Thermodynamics in Small Systems
- Outline
- Ever since the proposal of the paradox of "Maxwell's demon" in the 19th century, the relationship between thermodynamics and information has been attracted numerous attentions concerning the foundation of the second law of thermodynamics. Due to the recent developments of the experimental technologies of manipulating the nano and micro scale systems, the demon is becoming an experimental issue beyond a celebrated gedankenexperiment. In this colloquium, I’d like to talk about our theoretical result on the foundation of the relationship between thermodynamics and information. In particular, I will discuss the fundamental lower bounds of the thermodynamic energy cost needed for information processing such as feedback control, measurement, and information erasure. Our result constitutes the second law of "information thermodynamics," in which the information content and thermodynamic variables are treated on an equal footing. Our result also leads to a new resolution of the long-standing paradox of the Maxwell's demon. If time permits, I’d also like to talk about our recent experimental result, which has experimentally realized the Szilard-type Maxwell’s demon that converts the mutual information to the free energy for the first time.

- A diagrammatic approach to the dynamics of interacting Brownian particles
- Outline
- I present a diagrammatic formulation of a theory for the time dependence of density fluctuations in equilibrium systems of interacting Brownian particles. To facilitate derivation of the diagrammatic expansion I introduce a basis that consists of orthogonalized many-particle density fluctuations. I obtain an exact hierarchy of equations of motion for time-dependent correlations of orthogonalized density fluctuations. To simplify this hierarchy I neglect contributions to the vertices from higher-order cluster expansion terms. An iterative solution of the resulting equations can be represented by diagrams with three and four-leg vertices. I analyze the structure of the diagrammatic series for the time-dependent density correlation function and obtain a diagrammatic interpretation of reducible and irreducible memory functions. The one-loop self-consistent approximation for the latter function coincides with mode-coupling approximation for Brownian systems that was derived previously using a projection operator approach. As a more advanced application, I consider a four-point correlation function. First, I show that this function is connected to four-point functions used in the description of dynamic heterogeneities. Then, I apply the diagrammatic approach. I re-sum a class of diagrams which separate into two disconnected components upon cutting a single propagator. The resulting formula for the four-point correlation function can be expressed in terms of three-point functions closely related to the three-point susceptibility introduced by Biroli et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 195701 (2006)] and the standard two-point correlation function. The four-point function has a structure very similar to that proposed by Berthier and collaborators [Science 310, 1797 (2005), J. Chem. Phys. 126, 184503 (2007)]. It exhibits a small wave vector divergence at the mode-coupling transition. Finally, I use the formula for the four-point function to evaluate numerically a diverging dynamic correlation length.

- Collective dynamics in a random-field Ising model on a Bethe lattice
- Outline
- I talk about the Glauber dynamics of a random-field Ising model on a Bethe lattice.
In the system, a spinodal transition occurs with collective dynamics
when an external field is changed.
The classification of the universality in the collective dynamics can be
understood microscopically with some analytical techniques.
I also mention the relevance to purely dynamical nonergodic transition
in a kinetically constrained spin model.
