The equilibrium dynamics of the Dean-Kawasaki model for colloids: the standard MCT and beyond
- Outline
- This talk aims to communicate our recent results on the dynamics of equilibrium density fluctuations of colloids.
The Dean-Kawasakiequation, a stochastic model equation for the density fluctuations of colloidal dispersions,
poses a theoretical challenge of developing a systematic perturbation theory
which preserves the fluctuation-dissipation relation order by order, mainly due to its multiplicative noise nature.
A beautiful idea of time-reversal symmetry of the corresponding action offers a solution to the challenge:
a loop expansion method applied to the new dynamic action incorporating a new set of auxiliary variables
is guaranteed to preserve the fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR) order by order.
Our previous work along this line made an error of overlooking a delta function in one of the FDRs between the response
and correlation functions.
Restoring this missing contribution cries out for the distinct scenario from that in previous work.
Instead of obtaining a single closed equation for the density-density correlation function,
we now face with the simultaneous equations of the three independent correlation functions.
The standard MCT equation is retrieved from this coupled set of equations after a further approximation
to get an equation for the density-density correlation alone.
The full one-loop theory is analytically shown to remove the ergodic-nonergodic transition
via dynamic coupling to the auxiliary variable, making the dynamics always ergodic.

- Hierarchical heterogeneous dynamics in a supercooled liquid: configuration rearrangements and vibration modes
- Outline
- To understand the quantitative properties of dynamic heterogeneities on glassy particle systems,
we use the theoretical scheme of bond-breakage which can detect configuration rearrangements,
corresponding to the structural relaxations.
It is compared with the four-point correlation scheme
for the results of molecular dynamics simulations of binary-mixture glass forming liquids.
From the comparisons, we find superpositions of long- time heterogeneity of configuration rearrangements
and short-time heterogeneity induced by vibration modes.
The bond-breakage scheme detects relaxations without short-time vibrations.
The four-point scheme detects the mixed dynamics of the both.
We find that the results on four-point scheme are sensitive to the influence of such vibration modes
which give rise to detectable system-size effects in physical properties [1].
We also investigate the spatiotemporal relationship between short-rime vibrational motions
and long-time configuration rearrangements in the system.
We show the correlations between them [2].
Finally we focus on the break-down of Stokes Einstein relation in this system
with investigating crossover of the configuration changes caused by stringlike jump motions.
We show that the relaxation time and the viscosity grow more steeply
than the inverse diffusion constant at low temperature,
leading to breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation.
At low temperature, the diffusion occurs as activation processes
and may well be described by short-time analysis of rare jump motions
with broken bonds and large displacements [3].

- Outline

- Outline

Nonequilibrium thermodynamics theory describing heat engines working at maximum power
- Outline
- In recent years, there have been renewed interests in the efficiency
at the maximum power (EMP) of heat engines among theoretical physicists
since the so-called Curzon-Ahlborn (CA) efficiency [1] has been generally proved to
be the upper bound of EMP for the linear irreversible systems in 2005 [2].
In this talk, I would like to introduce some recent theoretical advances
on this new and old problem, especially focusing on our work.
First I study a molecular kinetic model of a finite-time Carnot cycle working
in the linear irreversible regime in detail [3, 4].
I show that the model satisfies a special condition to attain the bound (CA efficiency)
by analyzing its transport coefficients explicitly.
Then I propose a minimal model of general nonlinear irreversible heat engines [5],
extending the results of the linear irreversible systems [2].
I derive an upper bound of EMP for these systems, which turns out be higher than the CA efficiency.
If time permitted, I would also like to discuss physical significance of the size dependence
of EMP by a molecular dynamics computer simulation of a heat engine model [6].

Nonequilibrium Equation of States
for a Confined Quantum Gas: Effects due to a Moving Piston
- Outline
- We study a nonequilibrium equation of states for an ideal quantum gas confined in the cavity
under a moving piston with a small but finite velocity [1], [2].
Confining to the thermally-isolated process,
the quantum nonadiabatic (QNA) contribution to Poisson’s adiabatic equation and to Bernoulli’s formula
which bridges the pressure and internal energy is elucidated.
We carry out a statistical mean of the pressure operator
in both the low-temperature quantum-mechanical and high temperature quasi-classical regimes.
The QNA contributions are quadratic in the piston’s velocity and therefore time-reversal symmetric,
in marked contrast to the conventional belief, and they are positive,
which means that the moving piston gives rise to the apparently repulsive interaction
among non-interacting Fermi particles, for both expansion and contraction of the cavity.
The QNA contributions are inversely proportional to the longitudinal size of the cavity,
and thereby play a nontrivial role in nano-scale heat engines based on quantum dots.
The investigation is done for a unidirectionally-expanding 3-d rectangular parallelepiped cavity
as well as its 1-d version. Its relevance in a realistic nano-scale heat engine is discussed.

- Recent progress in mode-coupling theory for uniformly sheared underdamped systems
- Outline
- Mode-coupling theory (MCT) is the unique dynamical theory which describes glasses so far.
It has been known in equilibrium MCT that the glassy dynamics are coincident for underdamped (e.g. molecular liquids)
and overdamped (e.g. colloidal suspensions) systems.
This observation has lead to the extension of the MCT
to uniformly sheared systems merely for overdamped systems,
and it has almost been abandonded for underdamped systems.
However, we have figured out that the equivalence of the underdamped
and overdamped MCTs are broken in sheared systems,
due to the effect of current fluctuations.
We exhibit this inequivalence by presenting the "stress overshoot"
at the alpha-relaxation regime.
Underdamped MCT is a crucial framework for the theoretical study of the rheology of granular liquids.
We show our latest result on this subject and
discuss the possibility of understanding the stress-strain relation of sheared granular liquids.

- How to Reconcile Maxwell's Demon with the Second Law?
- Outline
- Ever since the nineteenth century,
Maxwell's demon has attracted a lot of attentions concerning the foundation of the second law of thermodynamics [1].
The demon can adiabatically decrease the entropy of thermodynamic systems by feedback control,
which seems to be a violation of the second law.
A crucial question is: What reconciles the demon with the second law?
In this talk, I will answer this question on the basis of our recent theoretical works [2-5].
First, I will introduce the basic concepts in information theory and nonequilibrium thermodynamics.
Second, I will show that, in contrast to the conventional view,
the positive entropy production during measurement compensates
for the negative entropy production during feedback control.
Third, I will briefly review the history of Maxwell's demon,
and clarify the relationship between our results and previous researches.
Our results constitute the second law of "information thermodynamics,"
in which thermodynamic quantities and information contents are treated on an equal footing.

- On the nonlinear mechanical response of colloidal glass
- Outline
- Glass is an isotropic solid and thus it appears very natural to describe it in terms of classical elasticity theory.
Fluctuations of strain and of the other coarse-grained hydrodynamic fields like density and momentum density,
then should obey the framework of (time-dependent) linear response theory based on equilibrium statistical mechanics.
In this talk I will discuss different approaches, one of them based on mode coupling theory,
which consider glass as a quasi-equilibrium solid and obtain elastic constants,
phonon dispersion relations, and strain field from microscopic starting points.
As glass is amorphous, the necessary evaluation of a strain field using e.g. video microscopy in colloids
is not obvious [1]. The nonlinear response of individual particles, frozen in the glass,
to strong external forces can also be considered [2].
Yet, glass is a metastable state and depends on the history of its preparation.
Extending mode coupling theory to capture the nonlinear response of glass under arbitrary time-dependent deformations [3],
the dependence of the quiescent glass state on its shear history can be explored.
Glass formed from the fluidized driven state keeps non-relaxed internal stresses
which bear the signature of the preparation history and can severely influence the mechanical performance of the glass.
Single particle motion detects their spatial correlations.
I will present confocal microscopy data, rheological measurements,
computer simulations, and schematic model [4] calculations within MCT
which capture the dependence of the glassy state on its shear flow in the (infinite) past.

- Outline

- Glass Transition: from Two to Infinite Dimensions
- Outline
- An overview of our research on the dependence of the glass transition on spatial dimension d will be given.
In the introduction a few experimental facts concerning this transition will be recalled and
a sketch of the crucial steps to derive a microscopic theory - the mode-coupling theory(MCT) -
for an ideal dynamical glass transition, and its predictions will be presented.
Then, MCT-results for monodisperse and binary colloidal liquids in $d=2$ will be compared with those in $d=3$.
Comparison with simulational results and the striking similarity of the critical packing fraction φc
with the random close packing result supports validity of MCT in $d=2$.
To interpolate between $d = 2$ and $d = 3$, a colloidal liquid between two parallel plates with distance $H$ is studied,
requiring an extension of MCT for bulk liquids.
The critical packing fraction $\varphi_{c}(H)$ shows an oscillatory $H$-dependence implying multi-entrant glass transitions.
These predictions will be compared with results from computer simulations.
Finally, motivated by Biroli and Bouchaud’s conjecture that MCT is a mean field theory,
its limit for $d\rightarrow \infty$ is discussed.
We find three different length scales on which the physical behavior is different.
Taking this into account, we derive the $d$-dependence $\phi_{c}(d) \sim d^{2}2^{-d}$
for the critical packing fraction which is in variance with the result from replica theory.
Although for $d\rightarrow \infty$ no violation of general properties of correlators is found,
I will argue why MCT may not be a mean field theory.

- Entropic forces for polymer translocation
- Outline
- Despite entropic force is widely recognized as crucial for polymer translocation
through nano pores or channels in numerous experiments,
to what extent is its importance is rarely explicitly quantified.
To extract the pure entropic contribution during polymer tug-of-war and recoiling,
we carry out a dry experiment of Langevin dynamics simulation.
The corresponding entropic forces are measured by an optical tweezer via Jarzynski equality and,
additionally, determined theoretically by a recursion formula.
These two approaches are more general than Freed-Edward’s diffusion equation
and provide highly coincident force values beyond the precision estimated by Muthukumar’s formalism.
We further derive a general formula, f = f ’+T ln(ra), to estimate the entropic forces for different channel widths,
channel stiffness, polymer persistence lengths,
and excluded volume strengths based on a reference force f ’ at temperature T.
As examples, we use this formula to quantify the entropic contribution in several recent DNA translocation experiments.

Formulation of Uncertainty Relation between Error and Disturbance in Quantum Measurement by using Quantum Estimation Theory
- Outline
- When we try to obtain information about a quantum system, we need to perform measurement on the system.
The measurement process causes unavoidable state change.
In this talk, we will report a resolution to formulate the Heisenberg's uncertainty relation by using quantum estimation theory.
In the introduction, we will review several uncertainty relations and explain why quantum estimation theory
is crucial to analyze the Heisenberg's uncertainty relation. By using quantum estimation theory,
we quantified of error and disturbance in the quantum measurement in terms of the Fisher information,
which gives the accuracy of the estimate of the system.
We obtained uncertainty relations between the error and disturbance in the quantum measurement.
We obtained the attainable bound of the product of the error and disturbance.
The bound is determined by quantum fluctuations and correlation function of the observables.

- An unified study of the glass and the jamming transition
- Outline
- The emergence of solidity in disordered assemblies of repulsive particles
has been observed in large variety of systems,
however it still remains difficult to understand at a fundamental level.
One can categorize the observed transitions into two types:
the ``glass'' transition which is observed in thermal system,
and the ``jamming'' transition observed in non-Brownian particles,
such as foams and granular materials. In this talk,
I will discuss our recent results on the differences and similarities of these two transitions.
We focus on the shear rheology of soft repulsive particles at large volume fraction.
Exploring the interplay between viscous dissipation and thermal motion,
we observed the glass transition when thermal fluctuations are important,
crossing over to qualitatively similar regimes near the jamming transition when dissipation dominates.
The result shows that they are very similar,
however occur over distinct time and stress scales and correspond to distinct microscopic dynamics.

- Non-Markovian dynamics in open quantum system
- Outline

- Outline

- Exploring how large molecules move in a solute gradient
- Outline
- Molecules move along a gradient of temperature in a fluid, called the Soret effect or theromophoresis.
Thermophoresis in aqueous solution depletes polymers such as polyethylene glycol from the hot region
and build its concentration gradient.
In this seminar we present different-sized solutes of colloids or DNA in such a solution can be accumulated
and separated via the counterbalance of thermophoresis and entropic force gradient
(Maeda, et al. Phys. Rev. Lett 107, 038301 (2011)).
Concerning in the size of a long DNA, its higher order structure,
which is relevant when dealing with DNA longer than ten and a few Kuhn segments changes effective size.
Hence we investigated a large molecule moves in this temperature and another solute gradients,
and the obtained result indicates the coupling with folding transition occurs
and leads the reversal behavior in molecular separation.

- Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions and Nonequilibrium Critical Point from AdS/CFT
- Outline
- The main theme of the present talk is application of the AdS/CFT correspondence to non-equilibrium physics.
A system with finite current density along the external electric field is out of equilibrium owing to
the presence of dissipation. Therefore, analysis of non-linear conductivity is a subject of non-equilibrium physics
and it is still a challenge.
We analyze non-linear quark-charge conductivity of a (3+1)-dimensional strongly-interacting gauge-theory plasma
by using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We discover a novel non-equilibrium phase transitions
and a non-equilibrium critical point that have never been reported experimentally or theoretically.
We define a non-equilibrium steady state analogue of thermodynamic potential in terms of the dual gravity theory.
We also define non-equilibrium analogues of critical exponents and compute them by using AdS/CFT.
In light of the possible universality, we expect that the newly discovered nonequilibrium critical point
can also be found in nature: this provides a prediction of superstring theory for the real world.

- Entropy in Eulerian Thermodynamics
- Outline
- The main idea is to formulate thermodynamics as an action principle.
Seminar in 4 parts:
Part I is a review of the Gibbsean action principle with emphasis on the role of entropy. Some important insight is difficult to get from the textbooks.
Part II extends the action principle to extended thermodynamics, incorporating hydrodynamics, and points out an important impact of entropy on the dynamics.
Part III discusses 3 examples to demonstrate the efficiency of an action principle approach.
Part IV is a discussion of the second law as applied to vertical atmospheres.

- Outline
- Mode-coupling theory (MCT) is known for its viability for describing the dynamics of glassy states,
such as molecular liquids and colloidal suspensions. MCT has been extended to sheared systems,
and has been applied to rheological studies. First, it was extended and applied to overdamped systems
by Fuchs and Cates [1, 2] and Miyazaki and Reichman [3], and later to underdamped systems by Chong and Kim [4],
whose microscopic dynamics is governed by the SLLOD equation.
However, aside from the above difference, there has been some contradictions between the theories of Refs. [2] and [4]. We reformulated the theory by Chong and Kim [4], with special attention to the translational invariance in the sheared frame, and figured out that actually it is an extension of the theory by Fuchs and Cates [2] to underdamped systems. In the talk, in addition to the theoretical and the numerical results of our work [5], comparison between the major sheared MCTs will be presented. The possibility of an extension of our theory to granular systems will also be discussed.

- Relation between phenomenology and its microscopic counterpart (tentative title)
- Outline
- What is a desirable relation between a phenomenology and its more `microscopic' counterpart?
The relation between thermodynamics andequilibrium statistical mechanics must be the best example of this relation,
but it is not so crystal clear. After discussing what aspects are not very clear about this relation
(or if I have enough time left), I wish to move on to nonequilibrium to explain what was (is) my perspective
to develop nonequilibrium statistical mechanics (if any).
I will try to make my talk understandable to ambitious beginners.

- Outline

- The relation between information and lower bound to a temperature of a Brownian particle
- Outline
- The ideas of Maxwell's demon have been discussed by many researchers.
The relation between information and the work extracted under feedback
control is lively discussed in the context of Maxwell's demon. As a
progress in the study of Maxwell's demon, the second law was generalized
under feedback control and this generalization was tested using a
trapped Brownian particle [1]. In addition, feedback control of the
Brownian motion has many useful applications ranging from a thermal
noise cancellation to a cooling for investigating quantum effects. In
the presence of measurement errors which are not negligible in
experimental settings, there are cooling bounds in these feedback
control systems [2].
We have studied the fluctuation-dissipation relation violation of a
Brownian particle in Langevin system under feedback control and
discussed the lower bounds to the temperature of a Brownian particle in
cooling process by feedback control. We have found the relation between
velocity-fluctuation as the temperature of a Brownian particle and the
mutual information content obtained by measurement for feedback control
[3]. This relation indicates that the cooling bounds are given by an
inequality similar to the Carnot efficiency
