- Dense suspensions flows and shear thickening fluids
- Outline
- Understanding amorphous materials is a long-standing challenge of condensed matter. This is true both
for the solid phase, which is disordered and glassy, and for the fluid phase, often driven and out-of-equilibrium.
The transition between these two phases -the jamming transition- is also intriguing: it is very different from
the melting transition, and occurs with no symmetry breaking. Observations instead support that it is a dynamical
critical point, with diverging length scale and singular rheological properties. I will review recent theoretical
approaches to this problem in the context of dense non-brownian suspensions. I will discuss a microscopic
description of a very well-known, but poorly understood phenomenon: the shear thickening process by which fluids
(typical dense suspensions) can become solid-like, allowing one to run on a pool of such a fluid material.

- Hydrodynamic Collective Effects of Active Protein Machines in Solution and Lipid Bilayers
- Outline
- Cytoplasm and biomembranes in biological cells contain large numbers of proteins that are cyclically changing
their shape. They are machines, such as molecular motors, and many kinds of enzymes. Here, we analyze hydrodynamic
effects induced by active proteins on other (passive) molecules in solution or in a membrane. We find that the
diffusion constants of all passive particles are substantially enhanced. Furthermore, when gradients of active
proteins are present, chemotaxis-like drift of passive particles takes place. In lipid bilayers, the effects are
strongly nonlocal, so that active inclusions in the membrane contribute to diffusion enhancement and the drift.
As we believe, our results may lead to a significant modification in the physical picture of a living cell.

- Single-molecule stochastic modeling of the channeling enzyme tryptophan synthase
- Outline
- The channeling enzyme tryptophan synthase provides a paradigmatic example of a chemical nanomachine.
It possesses two active centers and, as a single molecule, catalyzes a sequence of 13 different reactions
with a complex pattern of allosteric regulation and with an intermediate product channeled from one active
center to another. Here, the first single-molecule stochastic model of the enzyme is proposed and analyzed.
All its transition rate constants were deduced from the experimental data available and no fitting
parameters were thus employed. Numerical simulations reveal the development of strong correlations in the
states of the active centers and the emergent synchronization of intramolecular processes in tryptophan
synthase. While performed for a specific enzyme, this study sets a framework for stochastic modeling of
other chemical machines, such as channeling enzymes and multi-enzyme complexes.

- Modeling active fluctuations in living matter
- Outline
- Living organisms are inherently out-of-equilibrium systems. The processes driving the intracellular
dynamics are largely a challenge to physical interpretation. We propose a model for the dynamics of a probe
embedded in a living cell, where both thermal fluctuations and nonequilibrium activity coexist. The model
is based on a confining harmonic potential describing the elastic cytoskeletal matrix, which undergoes
random active hops as a result of the nonequilibrium rearrangements within the cell.
We describe the probe’s statistics and we bring forth quantities affected by the nonequilibrium activity.
We find an excellent agreement between the predictions of our model and experimental results for tracers
inside living A7 cells. Thus, we exploit our model to arrive at quantitative predictions for the parameters
characterizing nonequilibrium activity, such as the typical time scales of the activity and the amplitude
of the active fluctuations.
We then demonstrate that our model can be extended to include both complex rheological effects and
nonequilibrium stochastic forces. We employ new developments in stochastic energetics to predict the amount
of mechanical energy dissipated by such dynamics. By performing active microrheology and tracking micron-sized
vesicles in the cytoplasm of living oocytes, we provide unprecedented measurements of the spectrum of
dissipated energy. We show that our model is again fully consistent with the experimental data, and we use it
to offer predictions for the injection and dissipation energy scales involved in active fluctuations.

- Applications of the generalized quantum master equation to a quantum adiabatic pump and an excess entropy production
- Outline
- Recently, Yuge et al. applied the generalized quantum master equation (GQME) to a quantum adiabatic pump [1] and
an excess entropy production [2]. The GQME is a method to treat the full counting statistics by quantum master equation
technics. In a mesoscopic system weakly coupled to several baths, an adiabatic modulation of control parameters induces
the changes the number of the charges and spins of the baths. This phenomenon is called quantum adiabatic pump. According
to the GQME method [1], the pumped charges (spins) are given by a summation of a time integral of the steady charge (spin)
current and a geometric line integral in the control parameter space, which is originated from the“Berry phase” of the GQME.
This structure was also shown by the real-time diagrammatic approach [3] without using the “Berry phase”. We showed the
relation between these two approaches [4]. The entropy production induced by adiabatic modulation of control parameters can
also be treated by the GQME [2]. Yuge et al. analyzed the entropy production by the GQME for time independent measured
quantity and showed that the “Berry phase” corresponds to the symmetrized von Neumann entropy [5]. However, if the
thermodynamic parameters are modulated, we need to use a GQME for time dependent measured quantity. We justified the work
by Yuge et al. using such GQME.

- Anomalous processes with general waiting times: functionals and multi-point structure
- Outline
- Anomalous diffusion is a widespread phenomenon in nature characterizing the transport properties
of many systems living in complex non equilibrated environments, e.g. diffusing cells or chromosomes
moving in the cytoplasm. These systems are typically characterized by a non linear power-law scaling of
the mean square displacement, which is often conveniently modeled as a continuous-time random walk.
However, many examples of more complex dynamical behaviors, where a crossover between different scaling
regimes appears over time, have been recently provided thanks to new and more sophisticated experimental
techniques in biology, which conventional models fail to describe appropriately. Indeed, this clearly
signals the need of generalized models of anomalous diffusion, which are able to capture such complex
dynamics by virtue of a general waiting times' distribution. In this talk, we investigate a class of such
generalized anomalous processes, defined by using a representation in terms of a normal diffusive process
plus a stochastic time change, of which we obtain a complete characterization, including their functionals
and multi-point structure. A generalized Feynman- Kac formula is derived, where the non-Markovian features
are manifest in a memory kernel that is naturally related to the characteristic functional of the waiting
times' distribution. In the special case of a power law distribution we recover well-known results from
the theory of continuous time random walks. Our results are readily applicable to joint velocity-position
data of anomalous diffusive systems, for which a consistent underlying stochastic process can often not be
identified among other established models.

- Outline

- Rheology of Dense Sheared Granular Liquids
- Outline
- Granular flows are investigated extensively both in science and engineering. It has been noticed
that the density, or the volume fraction, is one of the most significant parameters for their
characteristics. While granular flows are studied by numerical simulations from the dilute gas phase
up to the dense jammed phase, the only well-established theory is the Boltzmann-Enskog kinetic
theory for granular gases, which is valid up to the volume fraction 0.5 [1].
To establish a theory above this density, we are attempting to extend the mode-coupling theory (MCT)
for glassy materials to granular liquids. By this approach, we have succeeded in reproducing the
steady-state shear viscosity obtained by simulations in the range of the volume fraction 0.50-0.60,
by shifting the density [2].
However, in contrast to MCT for thermal colloids, MCT for granular liquids exhibits dependence on
the choice of the initial distribution function, which is conventionally chosen to be canonical.
This feature illuminates the fact that the steady-state distribution of granular liquids is significantly
departed from the canonical distribution. To derive the exact steady-state distribution is an extermely
difficult task, but it might be possible to speculate an initial distribution which is closer to the
steady-state distribution than the canonical distribution. One way to perform this is to solve the
Liouville equation for the distribution function by a perturbation around the canonical distribution.
We discuss the possible form of the non-canonical initial distribution and its numerical implications.

We first show that exact free-energy functional under shear can be obtained in the large-dimensional limit [1].

non-trivial scaling of the shear-modulus around the jamming point [1].
Next we discuss an analysis of the Franz-Parisi potential [4] under shear which allows one to compute

- Accuracy of the microcanonical ensemble in small isolated quantum systems
- Outline
- Justifying the microcanonical ensemble (ME) only from quantum mechanics has recently attracted
renewed attention due to experimental realizations of isolated quantum systems such as ultracold atomic
gases [1]. In spite of the time-reversal symmetry of time evolution, effective stationary states have been
shown to occur and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) has been proposed as the underlying
mechanism for these states being well-described by the ME in the thermodynamic limit [2]. In contrast to
the previous studies on why the ME works in the thermodynamic limit, we study how accurately it does in
small systems. By numerically investigating the quantum quenches in the hard-core Bose-Hubbard model,
we show that the accuracy scales as $D^{-1}$ with the dimension $D$ of the Hilbert space [3]. We argue
that the $D^{-1}$ improvement of accuracy is much faster than the ETH ensures and derived from the
fact that we cannot induce correlations between numerous many-body eigenstates by a quantum quench.

- Fluctuation theorem for heat transport probed by a thermal electrode
- Outline
- We analyze the full-counting statistics of the electric heat current flowing in a two-terminal quantum conductor
whose temperature is probed by a third electrode ("probe electrode"). In particular we demonstrate that the
cumulant-generating function obeys the fluctuation theorem in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The analysis
is based on the scattering matrix of the three-terminal junction (comprising of the two electronic terminals and the
probe electrode), and a separation of time scales: it is assumed that the rapid charge transfer across the conductor
and the rapid relaxation of the electrons inside the probe electrode give rise to much slower energy fluctuations in
the latter. This separation allows for a stochastic treatment of the probe dynamics, and the reduction of the
three-terminal setup to an effective two-terminal one.
Expressions for the lowest nonlinear transport coefficients, e.g., the linear-response heat-current noise and
the second nonlinear thermal conductance, are obtained and explicitly shown to preserve the symmetry ofthe fluctuation
theorem for the two-terminal conductor. The derivation of our expressions which is based on the transport coefficients
of the three-terminal system explicitly satisfying the fluctuation theorem, requires the full calculations of vertex
corrections.

- Recent progress in experimental techniques have led to the measurement of precise physical properties of
bio-molecular motors, such as the heat dissipation of rotary motors and the dependence of molecular number on
the processivity of cytoplasmic motors. In parallel, there has been considerable progress in the understanding
of stochastic thermodynamics, where the behavior of thermodynamic machines in the fluctuating world is the main

In this presentation, I will talk about our recent theoretical works on the dissipative feature of F1-ATPase (F1)

explain the remarkable experimental results on the heat dissipation of F1[1], and our "totally asymmetric
allosteric model"[2] which explains the main observed features of this rotary motor. Then I will turn to the
recent experimental measurements on the collective motion of cytoplasmic dynein, and introduce the "force-induced
switching model"[3] in order to capture the observed transition from one-dimensional diffusive motion to efficient
cargo transport velocity. I will discuss on the design principles of rotary/cooperative motors inferred by these
phenomenological and testable models.

- Nonlinear response theory in the dynamical systems with long-range interaction
- Outline
- Large Hamiltonian systems with long-range interaction are trapped in long-lasting nonequilibrium quasistationary
states (QSSs) before they relax to thermal equilibria.
Accordingly, the relaxation time is so large that one can observe only QSS and may not be able to see the thermal equilibrium.
A way to analyze such a system is to use the Vlasov equation which is also called the collisionless Boltzmann equation,
and the QSSs are recognized to be associated with stable stationary solutions to the Vlasov equation [1,2].
Based on the Vlasov equation, the nonlinear response theory is provided by use of the transient linearization method[3]
in spatially one dimensional systems.
In this procedure, we first suppose that an asymptotic state is stationary, linearize the Vlasov equation around the
asymptotic state, and solve it implicitly.
Deriving the asymptotic self-consistent equation from this implicit form, we finally determine the asymptotic state.
This nonlinear response theory is applicable to even if the initial state is on the critical point of a second-order
phase transition in which naive perturbation theory does not work.
Then, one can obtain the nonlinear response to the finite size external force on or near the critical point.
We apply this theory to the Hamiltonian mean-field (infinite range XY) model, and look into the critical phenomena in QSSs.

- Dynamics of Swimming Particles: A direct numerical simulation approach
- Outline
- Active matter systems, composed of particles which transform local energy into directed motion, and are thus
self-propelled and out of equilibrium, are known to give rise to a variety of non-trivial dynamical properties
which are strikingly different from those of non-active/equilibrium systems (e.g., collective motion, giant number
fluctuations, self-sustained turbulence). Among these active systems, swimming particles in suspension are the most
common example, as they include all biological swimmers (e.g., bacteria, algal cell, spermatozoa), as well as
recently developed synthetic nano-motors. However, although they are ubiquitous in nature and fundamental to all
biological processes, our knowledge of such systems remains very limited. One of the main reasons for this, is the
inability to properly include the long-range many-body hydrodynamic interactions into realistic models of swimmers.
The goal of our research has been to study the role of hydrodynamic interactions on the dynamical properties of
swimming suspensions, using a Direct Numerical Simulation approach. To this end, we have extended the Smooth Profile
Method[1] (originally designed to study electro-hydrodynamic phenomena in colloidal dispersions), to include a generic
model of swimmers known as “squirmers”. This model accurately reproduces the far-field flow properties of swimmers
with different propulsion mechanisms, and is thus ideal when evaluating the relative importance of the hydrodynamic
interactions. In particular, we have used this method to perform a detailed study of the collective diffusion in
swimming suspensions, for both swimmers and tracer particles, which arises from the swimmers' stirring of the fluid.
We show the existence of two vastly different length- and time-scales for this diffusive motion. At short times, it is
dominated by the hydrodynamic interactions, while at longer times the diffusion is dominated by the particle collisions[2,3].

- Non-equilibrium dynamics of friction and wear
- Outline
- Friction and wear are frequently observed phenomena when two contacting elastic bodies move relatively against each other.
In this talk, we introduce our experimental/theoretical studies on friction and wear: (i) stick-slip friction of soft polymer
gels as a laboratory earthquake experiment, and (ii) theory on oxidative wear of metals. In the former topic, we discuss how
spatio-temporal heterogeneity in shear stress fields is related to rarely occurring giant slip events, and explain competing
situations between mechanical surface damage and protective oxidation reaction can result in steady wear modes as well as
drastic transient responses in the latter one. Through these examples, we would like to point out the importance of statistical
physics approaches to geophysical and engineering problems.

- Entanglement Properties of Two-Dimensional Statistical Mechanics Models
- Outline
- We investigated entanglement properties of two-dimensional quantum systems whose ground state can be obtained exactly.
A framework to obtain entanglement entropy of the VBS state which is the ground state of the AKLT model on symmetric graphs
was constructed[1]. Using the method and Monte Carlo methods, the entanglement properties of the VBS state on square and
hexagonal lattices were obtained[2]. Entanglement spectrum which is the dispersion relation of the corresponding entanglement
Hamiltonian of the VBS state on hexagonal lattice is similar with one-dimensional ferromagnetic Heisenberg model.
On the contrary, entanglement spectrum of the VBS state on square lattice is similar with one-dimensional antiferromagnetic
Heisenberg model. Analysis of the nested entanglement entropy indicates that the central charge of the entanglement Hamiltonian
is c=1 which is the same value as the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model[2,3].
Next we considered entanglement properties of a quantum lattice gas model on square and triangle ladders at a certain point[4].
We obtained the entanglement entropy, entanglement spectrum, and nested entanglement entropy by exact diagonalization. As a
result, critical phenomena in two-dimensional Ising and two-dimensional three-state Potts models appear in entanglement
properties of the model on square and triangle ladders, respectively.

cTPQ state とは温度を指定したTPQ state であり、

- Outline

- Outline
- We use molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the glassy dynamics
of the Gaussian Core Model (GCM).
The GCM is a three-dimensional one-component fluid in which particles
interact via a Gaussian potential.
It was previously shown that the dynamics of the GCM is well described
by the mode-coupling-theory (MCT).
In this work, we use the GCM to shed new light on the nature of dynamic
heterogeneities and the potential energy landscape of mean-field like
glass formers.
We find that the four-point dynamic susceptibility diverges on
approaching the Mode Coupling critical temperature and that its
temperature dependence is quantitatively described by the inhomogeneous
Mode-Coupling theory.
As an hallmark of mean-field like dynamic criticality, these giant
dynamic fluctuations coexist with a nearly Gaussian single-particle
dynamics.
The approach to the transition is accompanied by a topological change of
the potential energy landscape, as evidenced by the statistics of
stationary points and their localization properties.
Thus, the GCM implements almost exactly in three dimensions the
well-known glass transition scenario observed in p-spin mean-field models.

- Outline
