Optimal discrimination of optical modes

Valerio Scarani, National University of Singapore

Retrieving classical information encoded in optical modes is at the heart of many quantum information processing tasks, especially in the field of quantum communication and sensing. In this talk, I shall describe mode discrimination, both probabilistic and unambiguous, following [1] and some unpublished material. The tools are adaptations of those for state discrimination or channel discrimination, and will be recognised as such by the experts (in other words: I won't report on new maths; anyway, you wouldn't expect me to, right?). It's the formulation of the problem itself that requires the finesse of physics. [1] I.W. Primaatmaja, A. Ho, V. Scarani, Phys. Rev. A 103, 052410 (2021), https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.11104
