Abstract

In quantum information theory the locality of quantum operations plays an important role in the definition of entanglement. Similarly, in condensed matter theory locality plays a crucial role in defining topologically ordered phases. Finally, locality is also fundamental in the context of fault-tolerant quantum computation. In this talk I will explore the power of local operations at the crossover of topological order and fault-tolerance.
