Physics of Unstable Nuclei
Proceedings of the 10th Yukawa International Seminar
Edited by Kouichi Hagino, Hisashi Horiuchi, Masayuki Matsuo and
Isao Tanihata
Since the pionieering experiments in the mid-80s, our knowledge of the
nucleus which was restricted to stable nuclei has been rapidly expanded
into the vast region of unstable nuclei. We have already encountered
a lot of novel types of nuclear structure like neutron halo and skin which
are largely different from the structure of stable nuclei. The physics of
unstable nuclei is now a main field of present-day nuclear physics and
is developing actively. New facilities have been or are being constructed
in many major institutes around the world. In Japan, the construction of
the RI Beam Factory is in progress. We can thus expect further remarkable
progress of this field in near future.
The 10th Yukawa International Seminar (YKIS01) was held timely on the
subject of ''Physics of Unstable Nuclei'' at the Yukawa Institute of
Theoretical Physics in November 2001. This volume is the Proceedings
of YKIS01. Main topics of YKIS01 were structure of unstable nuclei,
reactions involving unstable nuclei, neutron-rich nuclear matter,
nuclear astrophysics and nucleosynthesis, as well as new theories
and computational methods. For each topic we had talks by world's leading
scientists and active discussions for future prospects. We had more than
180 participants including 64 from 19 foreign countries. This Proceedings
contains not only the invited talks and selected oral presentations but
also poster papers which were presented also at plenary sessions as
three-minute talks.
