Chiral Restoration in Nuclear Medium

Edited by Teiji Kunihiro, Atsushi Hosaka and Hajime Shimizu

This volume is a collection of papers of the invited talks presented at the YITP-RCNP workshop on Chiral Restoration in Nuclear Medium (Chiral02) October 7 - 9, 2002, at Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto University.

Exploring nonperturbative structure of the QCD vacuum and its possible changes in hot and/or dense matter constitute the central body of subatomic physics since 80's. The main focus of the present volume is to put on whether heavy nuclei are already dense enough that one can describe some phenomena inside the heavy nuclei in terms of possible changes of the underlying QCD vacuum.

This volume is a thorough survey on the recent theoretical and experimental development in this field. In fact, the topics covered in this volume are rather wide;
  (1) Chiral symmetry in nuclear medium
  (2) Chiral fluctuation in the σ channel in nuclei and chiral symmetry
  (3) Vector mesons in hot and/or dense matter and chiral symmetry
  (4) Pionic and Kaonic nuclei and chiral symmetry
  (5) Chiral symmetry and baryon resonances in nuclear medium
  (6) Heavy quark systems in nuclear medium and chiral symmetry
  (7) Chiral effective field theories and chiral properties of hot and/or dense medium
  (8) Lattice QCD at finite baryon density
  (9) The past experiments (CHAOS, TAPS, GSI, KEK, LNS, SPring8 etc) on hadrons in nuclei
  (10) On-going and future experimental projects on hadrons in nuclear medium.

Experimental data and theoretical achievements presented and discussed in the workshop are found very exciting and suggest an opening of a new era of nuclear physics; they seem to suggest that heavy nuclei is dense enough such that the chiral symmetry is partially restored.

In many papers included in this volume, presentations of speakers are nicely reproduced with more details and some introductory remarks. In particular, it is appreciated that the volume contains a rather extensive over view in this field by Prof. W. Weise. Furthermore, some theoretical approaches are also discussed by several authors including Lattice QCD (including Maximum Entropy Method), QCD sum rules, chiral unitary approaches, hidden local symmetry and so on. Therefore, this volume will serve as a useful introduction for non-experts as well as students.
