Finite Density QCD


Proceedings of the International Workshop

This volume contains the proceedings of the international workshop ``Finite Density QCD'' held at Nara, Japan, in July 2003. This is a collection of presented papers, and is intended as a guide for those who are interested in this field.

In the 1970s, dense matter was investigated with perturbative approaches. In the 1990s, Alford, Rajagopal and Wilczek and Rapp et al. studied color superconductivity states in great detail, and since that time, finite density QCD has become an important field and attracted much interest.

Recently, progress in the study of lattice QCD has become prominent. Such works include the multi-parameter reweighting method of Fodor and Katz, the imaginary chemical potential approach of deForcrand, Philipsen and of D'Elia-Lombardo, the Taylor expansion of hadron masses proposed by the QCD-TARO group, the Taylor expansion approach to the reweighting method introduced by the Swansea-Bielefeld group, and studies of two-color QCD by Illinois and Japan groups.

RHIC experiments are now exploring the high temperature and small but finite density regions of the QCD phase diagram, in which an interesting critical point may exist.

This volume contains many excellent reviews, e.g., a good overview of this field by Prof. Alford, a primer of finite density lattice QCD by Prof. Lombardo, a detailed but clear review of the QCD phase diagram and critical points by Prof. Stephanov, and an overview of chiral restoration in nuclei by Prof. Kunihiro. Reviews of meson condensation for high density hadronic matter and the strong coupling approach are also included. The invited speakers, Fodor, Katz, deForcrand, Ejiri, Karsch and Sinclair, who are most actively carrying out lattice QCD calculations at finite density, reported their research activities. There are also many papers by young researchers.

Those who are interested in this field will surely find this volume a very useful reference.
