Progress of Theoretical Physics Supplement No. 157
Statistical Physics of Disordered Systems and Its Applications
Proceedings of the International Conference
Edited by Koji Hukushima, Kazuyuki Tanaka and Hidetoshi Nishimori
The present volume reports on the research activities
in spin glasses,
information processing and related problems discussed at the
International Conference on Statistical Physics of
Disordered Systems and its Applications (SPDSA 2004)
in the Shonan Village Center, Japan,
from 12th to 15th July 2004, a satellite
meeting of STATPHYS 22 (The 22nd International Conference
on Statistical Physics). More than 110 participants from
many parts of the world joined, and enjoyed, hot discussions
on the new developments of the spin-glass theory and
its application to various interdisciplinary fields,
particularly, to the probabilistic information processing.
The theory of spin glasses has been one of the central topics
in the statistical mechanics of phase transitions and critical
phenomena for almost thirty years. Moreover, activities
in spin glass theory have also been exerting strong influences
over the interdisciplinary field of probabilistic information
processing such as error-correcting codes, image processing
and optimization problems. Methods of statistical mechanics
of disordered systems, spin glass theory in particular,
have been applied to standard and new problems
in information processing.
The present volume serves as a comprehensive summary of current
activities in these fields and will be an indispensable reference.
