Physics of Non-Equilibrium Systems:

This volume contains invited lectures at the international symposium ``Physics of Non-Equilibrium Systems: Self-Organized Structures and Dynamics Far from Equilibrium" held at Nishinomiya City, Japan, from October 3 to 4, 2005.

Non-equilibrium phenomena in systems far from thermal equilibrium manifest themselves in various fields of science, including physics, chemistry, biologyc and material science. Their study is of central importance in the theory of pattern dynamics and statistical physics and has aroused ever-increasing interest over the past few decades. Also, it is expected that research about such phenomena will lead to new applications in diverse fields of science and technology. For example, there have been many attempts recently to apply the concept of dissipative structures to domain control in systems of nano/mesoscopic scales. Developments in non-equilibrium physics could also be important for understanding fundamental properties of biological systems, such as efficiency, robustness, sensitivity and adaptation.

The topics covered include:
(1) Single-molecule biophysics,
(2) Effective Descri ption of small non-equilibrium systems,
(3) Out-of-equilibrium nanosystems,
(4) Cell adhesion as dynamic interplay of lock-and-key, generic and elastic forces,
(5) A communication perspective on network topologies,
(6) Nanoscale pattern for mation in non-equilibrium surface chemical reactions,
(7) unfolding dynamics of single collapsed DMA molecules, etc.

This volume serves as a survey on the recent theoretical and experimental development in this field, and will be of value to researchers, as well as to non-experts and students interested in this subject.
