30 Years of Mathematical Methods in High Energy Physics
— In Honor of Professor Tohru Eguchi's 60th Birthday —
Proceedings of the International Conference
Edited by T. Takayanagi and S. Yahikozawa
This volume of the Progress of Theoretical Physics Supplement contains
the proceedings of the international conference ``30 Years of Mathematical
Methods in High Energy Physics", which was held March 17--19, 2008, at
the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University.
This international conference looked back on the progress in high
energy physics of the past 30 years and aimed to foresee the next 30 years.
During the past 30 years, there has been remarkable progress in
theoretical high energy physics, particularly in such areas as gauge
theories, quantum gravity, superstring theory, and related mathematics.
These developments have also inspired progress in other areas of science,
such as condensed matter physics, cosmology and pure mathematics.
However the central quest of this field is to discover the fundamental
laws of physics, and to answer some of the most basic questions of
science, which include the origin and the fate of the universe.
In this conference, there were a number of interesting ideas presented about
developments in the next 30 years.
Also, this conference was organized in celebration of the 30th
anniversary of the discovery of the Eguchi-Hanson instanton and
Professor Eguchi's 60th birthday. He is now Director
of YITP at Kyoto University.
The main topics in this conference were the following:
(1) Recent developments in string theory
- Gauge/Gravity correspondence and cosmology
- Physics of black holes
- Quantization of string theory with RR fluxes
- Topological string
- D-Branes and D-Modules
- Integrability of spin chain, etc.
(2) Application of string theory
- Holographic QCD
- Semiconductor
- Non-Abelian gauge theories and fluid dynamics, etc.
(3) Wide field
- Exact solutions in N = 2 SUSY gauge theories
- Gauge mediation
- New structure in the XXZ model
- Non-rational CFT's, etc.
In the conference, active researchers at the forefront of each field
presented up-to date research outcomes, and vigorous discussions were
also held. There were 192 lively participants in total, including many
physicists, mathematicians, postdocs, and graduate students. Professor
Y. Nambu (Norbel prize laureate), who was one of
the participants, impressively spoke about Professor T. Eguchi in the
conference banquet.
The photos about the participants and the invited speakers can be
viewed at the conference web site:

We believe that the conference contributes to further development in
the fields.
This volume will serve as a source of information, which can look over
the recent progress, on the area not only for experts but also for
researchers and students interested in new subjects.
