About the conference

The Yukawa International Seminars (YKIS) have evolved from the former Kyoto Summer Institutes (KSI) which started in 1978 and now cover various fields of theoretical physics ranging from cosmology to physics of complex systems. (Visit the Yukawa Institute Homepage for the topics of the past YKIS's. ) The Yukawa International Seminar 2007 (YKIS2007) "Interaction and Nanostructural Effects in Low-Dimensional Systems" will be held on November 5-30, 2007 in Kyoto, Japan.

The workshop YKIS2007 consists mainly of three workshops, two mini-symposiums, and a symposium covering all topics. The first two workshops are followed by a mini-symposium.

The whole period is devided into four parts according to the topics. Tentative schedule is as follows:

(A) November 5-11:
workshop on one-dimensional systems with a one-day symposium on November 9.
(B) 12-20:
workshop on two-dimensional and nanostructural systems with a one-day symposium on November 16.
(C) 21-23:
international conference on all topics.
(D) 24-30:
post-conference workshop on all topics.

Banquet will be held in the evening of November 22 (THU) at "Kyoto Royal Hotel".

See "Program" for the list of invited speakers.

Scope

Low-dimensional quantum systems have been actively studied ever since the pioneering work of Bethe in the 1930's. Recently, nanoscience has attained remarkable development with the advance of minute processing technology. Attention should be paid for its significance also from a point of view of low-dimensional physics.

The YKIS2007 aims at providing a forum for the two important areas of physics: low-dimensional quantum systems with deep physical and mathematical implications together with long history of research, and rapidly growing nanostructural physics in the forefront of materials science.

The interaction of physicists working in these fields will stimulate others, and may give new inspiration for further development. Each participant in YKIS2007 can stay in the Yukawa Institute during the workshop with an individual desk. They can take ample time for discussion with other participants in the comfortable climate of November in Kyoto.

The presentations in YKIS2007 are mostly on theoretical ones, but important experimental work will also be featured. The main topics will include the followings:

(i) Zero-dimensional systems:
Electronic states in quantum dots and Kondo effect,
First-principle calculations for the electronic states,
Quantum dots in strong magnetic fields,
Electronic and lattice states in fullerenes,
Quantum entanglement and quantum computation,
Atomic Bose condensation and pair condensation by optical cooling,
Dynamical processes of atomic condensations.
(ii) One-dimensional systems:
Many-body effects in nanotubes,
Electronic and lattice states in nanotubes,
Quasi-one-dimensional oxides and other compounds,
Effects of orbital degeneracy,
Photonic crystals,
Non-equilibrium states,
Exact theory for dynamics of spins and charges,
Conformal field theory and bosonization.
(iii) Two-dimensional systems:
Graphenes,
Quantum Hall systems,
First-principle calculation of electronic states,
Multi-component systems,
Extension of mean-field theories,
Frustration and topological effects,
Hidden symmetry-breaking,
Mechanisms of superconductivity.

Important theoretical work of general interest will also be included.

Presentation

Abstract submission was closed.(July 31)

We call for poster presentations and several oral ones. If you want to present your paper, please submit the title and the abstract of your presentation when you register yourself. Note that only a limited number of oral presentations will be accepted because of the organization of the program. We currently plan poster sessions on November 21 and 22. See "Registration" page for the detail about the abstract submission.

Your abstract will be reviewed by the program coordinators and the acceptance will be notified via email by the end of August.
