Mixing shear and dilation in marginal matter

Soft sphere packings and random spring networks are two canonical models of marginal matter. I will present simulations and theory describing packings and networks as they undergo deformations that mix shear and dilation. My main goals are twofold: (i) I will show that pre-tension can be exploited to tune the shear modulus of random spring networks; and (ii) I will show that there are surprising differences in the way networks and packings dilate in response to shear.
