"Decoherence - from quantum theories to gravity"
Fumika Suzuki (University of British Columbia)
If one takes into account that the relative motion degrees of freedom of a quantum system with its dipole moment decoheres by a photon radiation, one may expect that similar coherence loss occurs on a quantum system with its quadrupole moment via gravitational radiation. By studying a system coupled to a graviton bath in terms of path integrals, real and false loss of coherence in weak gravity are discussed. In the weak gravity regime, it is expected that the primary loss of coherence would be given by gravitational radiation away. On-shell gravitons are responsible for those gravitational-wave-induced decoherence, while off-shell gravitons may contribute to false loss of coherence in Newtonian limit.
